Reflection (November 30th, 2017)
Describe
For Project 2, I was paired with Andy Chu and Jason Lin. Our Discover process took a more formulaic route with the inclusion of academic research, interviewing, and observations as opposed to the usage of pure interest in Project 1.
Our first assignment was to do individual research. I wrote a reflection during the process as documentation:
In the group meetings, we discussed each of our individual research ideas and data and came up with inquiries for each idea to determine their effectiveness as a project idea, mainly in the categories of significance, validity, and interest. My ideas were largely discarded as too difficult, including the ones I pursued further on emotional interest. Ironically, it was the instructor that suggested further exploration of my emotional state that warned us the difficulty of such ideas. We each presented our ideas and posed questions for each one of them to achieve greater understanding and indication of their viability as project ideas.
Through the process of elimination, we ended up with Jason Lin's topic of homophobia in Taiwan. All members did further research on the questions we generated for the topic of homophobia in Taiwan. However, even after our research, we have yet to define the user, the scale, nor the aspect of topic for our project.
Think/Feel
I think that the more formatted nature of the second Discover process was more ideal. I feel as if my exploratory abilities, however, did not improve. What started as a potentially fresh new outlook on research and observation quickly turned into a monotonous drag of desperation in the search for ideas that I was quick to reject. It certainly did not help when the standard of research for good scores were revealed after our first wave of research. The grading system being used certainly did not matter in the face of mid-year reports requested by colleges, so my mood and motivation for this class slumped from that point forwards. I had hope that perhaps one of the ideas I truly care about may be further developed in this opportunity, but everyone mostly agreed that they were too difficult to achieve.
Evaluate
I believed that did the necessary exploratory research for the Discover process. For ideas, my methodology ranged from observations, personal reflections, online searches, and interviews. I was evaluative of each method and tried to record my thoughts on each aspect. Despite being able to display part of my reflective nature, I struggled with the task at hand and tried with my greatest effort to generate what I thought was a sufficient quantity and quality of ideas given my mental circumstances. I believed that I also did well to accept and approach the ideas of my teammates to further my research.
Envision
I have little vision of what I could have done other than increased brute-force research. I believe that my creativity and motivation hit a ceiling in the process, so the only thing that could have been dragged beyond its life span was my effort. However, I believed it also overheated towards the end.
Plan
With the current topic decided, I have to make it work. I have to answer all the remaining inquiries we have for it to certify its effectiveness as a project idea. Such includes the defining of users so that I could further develop interview questions for the next step in the Discover process.
Personal Issues I Am Dealing With
- College Prep
- Stress
- Motivation
- Negativity
- Shyness
Interviews
- Father:
- Inconsistent career tasks
- He works in technology research, but he was assigned a wide array of contrasting tasks (medical, autonomous vehicles, Apple products, environmental…) throughout his career
- It’s difficult to predict and prepare for upcoming challenges
- Cannot dive too deep into any single field, subject keeps changing
- Note: I likely cannot impact one's professional life or designation.
- Mother:
- One of the few working mothers
- Away from home during the day, cannot manage household
- Extremely busy/frustrated
- Note: Very focused problem. Not a lot of working mothers I know of.
Project Ideas
- Fighting misinformation
- What is the challenge?
- The Internet, news, and social media is riddled with ignorance. This involves daily life and politics.
- Fighting misinformation is to change the way people perceive information and for them to discover and think for themselves.
- How did you notice it?
- I have used Internet forums and discussion boards for a long time.
- Why is it significant?
- Factionalism on ideals, religion, and politics all start with misinformation.
- Research
- Science/political-based
- Environmental issues such as climate change
- Intentional corporate fraud
- Donate to them so they will “counter” misinformation (media?)
- Safeguards, policymaking, court?
- Focuses on policy and rules
- Does not consider presentation or perception (potential idea?)
- Generating creative ideas
- What is the challenge?
- Allow anyone to generate a list of any subject through creativity in a short amount of time.
- How did you notice it?
- I have trouble generating creative ideas. I think a lot of people have trouble doing it on whim.
- Why is it significant?
- It will be so convenient if I could just do it on whim through the help of training or a tool.
- Honestly, it’s not that important, but it might change people’s outlook or basic approach to basic stuff.
- Research
- Appears to already be comprehensive with research
- Dead end?
- How to open people up to conversation
- What is the challenge?
- To open anyone to a conversation without any tension.
- How did you notice it?
- I tried asking my father but he immediately became defensive and “aware” of my so-called judgemental question that I tried to keep as casual as possible.
- Needless to say, I do not tolerate that and will do anything to get a normal conversation with him.
- Why is it significant?
- It is second nature to some people, so it probably isn’t too significant.
- Being able to easily attain connections is a useful tool in life.
- Research
- Teaches behavior and manners.
- Focus on the other person, not yourself
- Be interested
- Empathy
- I hate the intersection at our school
- We’re moving soon, I get it.
- Can’t do anything about public policy, I get it.
- Optimism
- What is the challenge?
- To be optimistic to a healthy and appropriate level for every situation.
- How did you notice it?
- I am not an optimistic person.
- Why is it significant?
- Changing perspectives can make a lasting impact on people’s daily lives and influence happiness and work ethic.
- Optimism also contributes to wellbeing and health.
- Research
- Gratitude-based approach with research and studies.
- Dead end? Too many common methods. Not developed enough.
Group Meeting (November 23rd, 2017)
Posed Questions for Project Ideas
- Jason Lin
- Homophobia in Taiwan
- Where and how is the problem most significant?
- What do the LGBT organizations do to support their cause?
- Can opinions/habits/mindsets be changed in project duration?
- What methods are used? Can we use them?
- How do we judge our success?
- Andy Chu
- Helping foreigners in Taiwan
- What troubles/hindrances do they often encounter?
- How do we engage them?
- Why don’t people use helpful apps?
- Prioritize most basic/important words?
- What procedural things do people have trouble with?
- Hackerspaces
- Target audience?
- Good examples?
- Purpose?
- How to measure success?
- Good platforms?
- Darren Chiang
- Online misinformation
- What methods are there?
- How to judge success?
- How to determine misinformation?
- Initiating conversation
- How widespread is this problem?
- How to create scenarios?
- What problems do people face when initiating conversations?
- Generating ideas
- What is the extent of our goal?
- What is the psychology behind idea generation?
- Optimism
- Why do people need to be optimistic?
- What does it mean to be optimistic?
- Can people change to be more optimistic?
Group Meeting (November 27th, 2017)
Final Topic: Perception of homosexuality in Taiwan
New Learnings
- Jason and Andy’s close relatives have strong, decisive opinions on homosexuality.
- Apparently I’m the odd one out.
Questions
- Where and how is the problem most significant?
- What do the LGBT organizations do to support their cause?
- Can opinions/habits/mindsets be changed in project duration?
- What methods are used? Can we use them?
- How do we judge our success?
- What are the causes of homophobia in Taiwan?
Areas of Disagreement
- I do not want any part in this if tension gets serious with our users.
- I see difficulty in actually visualizing the problem and addressing it. Isn’t policy going to change in a few years? Isn’t Taiwan doing well by Asian standards?
- Most members are content with the topic, so I am content.
Focused Research (November 30th, 2017)
- Study finds association between attitude to homosexuality and intention of actions and also the contributing factors.
- Target: nurses from Southern Taiwan
- Results
- Lower intentions to treat homosexual patients if against homosexuality (Reasoning for project)
- However, we cannot reasonably target nurses with our project
- Attributes to more “accepting” nurses:
- Knows homosexual friends/relatives
- Higher education
- Previously provided care to homosexual patients
- Attributes to less accepting nurses:
- Worked for a longer period
- Labels self as absolutely heterosexual
- Religious
- Notes/Questions
- What are “dimensions?”
- “Participants had the most negative attitude toward homosexuality in the ‘contact’ and ‘stereotypes’ dimensions, followed by the ‘morality’ dimension and then the ‘condemnation/tolerance’ dimension.”
- Morality and tolerance less of an issue compared to typical stereotypes/awkward encounters?
- Nearly unusable.
- Very abstract in approach (just be objective/clear in defining homophobia)
- New measure of homophobia called “IHP.”
- “The IHP was found to have a reliability of .90 and good content and factorial validity.”
- Music?
- Challenging representations of sexuality through story/performance
- Teaching/Promoting respect
- This is very long. I will have to focus on specific parts at later stages (background in later discovery, methods during ideation)
- Internalized: against themselves
- You can get support from:
- Other LGBTQ people
- Online communities of LGBTQ people
- Trusted LGBTQ adults that you may already know, such as family members or teachers
- Straight people who are allies to LGBTQ people
- A Gay/Straight Alliance at your high school, if applicable.
- LGBTQ organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), The Trevor Project, and Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays(PFLAG)
- Stuff to use?
- Educate
- Fight stereotypes
- Understand
- Addressing others
- Must be safe! Strangers are a bad idea
- Stay calm, don’t be aggressive
- Measuring homophobia?
- Negative cognitions
- Avoidance
- Aggression
Possible Users
- Individual User
- Too focused?
- Too personal/imposing?
- Group of users
- Too difficult to manage?
- Too unfocused?
- PAS students/faculty/teachers
- How much of any issue is homophobia in PAS?
Generating Interview Questions (November 30th, 2017)
- Have you ever considered about a situation where your close friend/relative is revealed to be homosexual?
- How would you respond to such?
- Why would you respond like that?
- Why? (x4) (Maybe more subtly)
- What do you think it’s like to be homosexual?
- What would your parents think about homosexuality?
- Why do you think some people are homosexual?
- Do you know anyone one who is actually homosexual?
- Tell us about that person.
- Do you see any difference in treatment to homosexual people in Taiwan?

Our first assignment was to do individual research. I wrote a reflection during the process as documentation:
"I first determined that finding problems through my own experiences or observations is too difficult. I have many problems that are either too specific or complex to deal with on a scale of a school or greater. I already used the “procrastination card”, so that leaves motivation, creativity, happiness, and optimism if I am to use my current emotional state. All of these are a little too deep in life’s philosophies and do not make good project ideas. I observed a huge rift in the Internet and media riddled with misinformation, factionalism, and corporate facilitation, but none of these ideas are doable on an effective scale. In my current state, I do not believe I can find a satisfying project idea through only my experience and knowledge.
I decided to search online with simple terms such as “basic problems of life.” Google interpreted this as “first world problems,” and while there were plenty of clickbait results and lists, the negative connotation definitely skewered the data into falsifying their validity. My conclusion is that those results are all mere pet-peeves caused by personal issues that vary per individual character. They don’t include a single satisfying project idea, of which I consider to be something that immediately catches my attention. I decided to start asking friends and searching social media to find any problems people tend to deal with, but the friends do not respond seriously and searching social media is unfocused and inefficient.

I honestly believe that widening the scale beyond PAS made it more difficult to generate ideas. I go too deep into things that are too complicated to solve."
My instructor disagreed on how I thought my personal emotional state generated unreasonable project ideas, so my next step was to further expand on them in exploratory research. More rounds of individual research in between the group meetings were done, but the group meetings themselves were hindered by the absences of different members for various dates due to circumstances. In the group meetings, we discussed each of our individual research ideas and data and came up with inquiries for each idea to determine their effectiveness as a project idea, mainly in the categories of significance, validity, and interest.
