Describe
The first abstract design thinking project assignment was to envision an ideal birthday for an assigned partner while the partner in turn design your birthday. The class was introduced to the overall process of design thinking: empathize > define > ideate > prototype > test. To help better embed the methodology to our general approach to life and problem solving, the birthday challenge was designed as an introductory exercise. We were to interview our partner in two phases, identify the problem, brainstorm the solutions, receive feedback, and then design the ideal birthday for our partner.
I was assigned to work with Wayne Hsu, and we faced several problems. Both of us known each other for years and have a fundamental connection due to our awkward place in social relations. Wayne had trouble opening up or giving a definite answer although I already had considerable empathy with him. None of us were truly able or willing to breach new grounds in the interview, so the ideas we had for each other's birthdays were all entirely based on our preexisting knowledge.
I had an easier time narrowing down the problem through abstract wording and devised several ideas that were fitting for him. Wayne's ultimate birthday turned out to be a slight twist to his average day with nothing overbearing to make it a superficial attempt to open up an introvert. My ultimate birthday was goofy and rather based on whatever I claimed to like in the past. I wasn't disappointed, but I may be appreciative if Wayne ever will go through such trouble for me.
Think/Feel
I felt empty and lost during the two interview phases. The match-up between me and Wayne felt like the ill-doing of fate--in a class of creativity, both of us needed most help. From start to finish, I remained sorely disappointed in my creativity and wondered about how I will progress through the semester. I feel as if I missed the purpose of this class.
Evaluate
My interviewing in general need a bit more passion and effort. Perhaps I may be incapable of extracting information from Wayne, but I need to work on answering interviewing questions to give Wayne more information to work with.
Envision
I believe that my design for Wayne is as good as it can be, or at least from a source such as me.
Plan
I tried my best to open up Wayne's mind and gleaned what I can. What I will plan to do is to improve on interviews, both interviewing and being the interviewee.
